Same-sex desire is not sufficient to explain "gay culture." One might hypothesize that some element of gender dysphoria is involved.

I'm not sure that gender dysphoria has everything to do with it. If it was same-sex attraction alone, the gay community would be a community of androphiles, a masculine brotherhood whose collective masculinity would be quite high due to the positive feedback from their fellows.
Homosexuality and gender dysphoria are not inextricably linked. You, Jack Donovan, myself, and many others are proof of that. I take the position that for many gay men, the gender dysphoria is not inherent, but merely put on, a set of customs that may have once been linked to homosexual men, but no longer. A part they are instructed to play to gain belonging to the group. Hence, the over-the-top lengths that some gay men go to prove their gayness. Witness the young men who realize their homosexuality and become almost unrecognizable in behavior and even temperament after being formally introduced and initiated into the gay community. Frightening and repulsive.
Do straight men say, "Gay guys can be as queer as they want, as long as they don't get too close," or "Gay guys can get as close as they want, as long as they don't get too queer"? Me thinks its the latter for most guys.
