Wasn't that the point of court fools and jesters? An outlet for people to complain about each other's failings and flaws without fear of reprisal. Times haven't changed much.
I once heard an apocryphal story that a very strict inquisitor howled with laughter when a jester joked that the local bishop was the most devout believer in the Trinity, because each day he ate three meals of three courses, with three dishes to a course. Or something to that effect. When a duke asked him why he laughed, the inquisitor responded, "because it's true!"
