Simple pleasures

A beautiful day, sunny and temperate, now a bright clear evening. Discovered that my loose change jar had three times more money in it than I thought.

Chicken wings baking in the oven --sesame oil, cumin, hot sauce-- with blue cheese dressing waiting. A bottle of Cabernet. A Harry Potter movie. Vanilla yogurt for dessert. A cigar later, if I'm in the mood, and a glass of brandy.

Not bad.

My friend VB dropped by, with his wolf-dog Molli, and chocolate chip cookies.

And then much later, B called from Manchester to say hi.

As I said, not bad.

Astounding to me that your friend has a wolf-dog in San Fran, considering the stigma they carry. But the stigma may be lessening, because numerous breeds that have received recent public recognition contain large amounts of wolf stock, which may help to lessen the negative side effects of selective breeding in large breed dogs. The Saarloos Wolfhound and the Czechoslovakian Vlcak are especially striking. Would love to see these breeds and others get wider recognition and acceptance.

They're actually illegal here, so whenever he's asked about it, he lies. It's a beautiful animal and the response from people is almost universally positive.

Luckily, his wolfishness shows in an almost complete indifference to any humans beside his master, which makes him perfectly safe, even with children. Other dogs provoke him once in a while, but with people he has the gentleness of the unconcerned.

Reminds me of an old 90s show I watched when I was a kid. "Due South," it was about impeccably clean, honorable, and polite Mountie Benny Fraser who teamed up with a snarky Italian-American cop to track down his father's killer, and stayed on as a liaison between the Canadian consulate and the Chicago police.

A well-done show that wasn't afraid of poking fun at Canadian and American stereotypes, and had some moments of actual gravitas. The Mountie stereotypes were played to the hilt; and this was a Canadian show, mind you. It didn't hurt that I had what I now recognize as a crush on the main character. The actor is in his fifties, and still quite handsome.

I mention the show because Benny had a pet wolf dog who could read lips (deaf, you see) named Diefenbaker. One of many recurring jokes was a Chicagoan Benny was talking to would eye Dief warily and ask if he was a wolf. Benny or his partner would respond without missing a beat that, no, he wasn't a wolf, he just looked like one.

Good show. I highly recommend it. The show holds up well, even without nostalgia filters.

God, way to make me feel old!

Sorry! I can't help it that I was literally 8 or so when I was watching it with my folks! :P

If it's any consolation, I felt oddly old when I saw The Return of the King on Turner Classic Movies one night. I remember going to see it in theaters with my dad. Now there's a movie that has influenced my view of male relationships. I know Frodo and Sam are just friends, but not much would need to be added to make it a romance. "Don't you let go." I choke up every time.
