Where the boys are

The Glades. Cop show about the Everglades. Lead is an actual guy, head to toe, inside and out. Talks like a guy, moves like a guy. Even stands still like a guy.

And....he's not American. Aussie.

3.10 to Yuma. Great American cowboy story. Starring...two other Australians. Upcoming Superman...a Brit (although after the comic's owners had the Man of Steel renounce his American citizenship, why should I care?). Spartacus...a Brit. Thor...Aussie. King Leonidas in 300...Gerard Butler. It goes on.

Who follows in the bootsteps of Lee Marvin, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Clint Eastwood, Bruce Willis, even Harrison Ford?

Where are the rugged American actors under 50?

And let’s not forget such rugged Anglo-Saxon stars as Daniel Craig, Hugh Jackman, Eric Bana, Clive Owen, and Jason Statham. (Gerard Butler is Scottish, incidentally).

I really have to agree with your assessment of today’s American leading men. There really does seem to be a testosterone deficiency. I’ve been lamenting this trend for years. It really changed in the late Sixties, with the onslaught of the counter culture and the collapse of the studio system. It’s probably doubtful that we’ll ever again see someone as wonderful as the likes of Robert Mitchum, or the divine, Clint Walker.

It really is a callow bunch, isn’t it? Just look: Leonardo DiCaprio, Keanu Reeves, Ryan Reynolds, Adam Sandler, Channing Tatum, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Tobey McGuire, Johnny Depp, Topher Grace, Ashton Kutcher, Ryan Gosling, Seth Rogen, Dane Cook, Zac Efron, Robert Downey Jr., Josh Hartnett, Stephen Dorff, Ryan Phillipe, Ben Stiller, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Colin Farrell, Orlando Bloom, and the late, River Phoenix.

There’s no way any of these laddies, would have been a leading man in the Forties or Fifties, or even the early Sixties. They’re the equivalent of boy toys and twinks. At this rate, Justin Bieber will eventually be in films. Even God forbid, Alan Lambert!

Not all hope is lost, however. There are still virile stars like: Matthew McConaughey, Matt Dillon, Mark Wahlberg, Joe Manganiello, Vince Vaughn, Aaron Eckhart, Jon Hamm, and Javier Bardem.

You, me, and Joan Collins, are on the same wavelength:
