Given my ranting here, that might surprise. But one of the biggest reasons lies in the posting I did yesterday, where the commander of the Pacific Fleet was forced to resign in disgrace because of his alleged (he denied it) homosexuality. In 1911, his activity was still was something literally unspeakable:
of such a nature as to forbid explicit statement in print. It may be sufficient to say that (it is) the same vice which caused the downfall of Oscar Wilde...His officers considered sending him a loaded revolver, as swift way out.
It seems so antique, but it was very real. Every age has its pros and cons. At least in this one, no one will be sending me a loaded gun.
