I have no problem with great religious buildings. On the contrary. But here's two nut-job proposals:
Christianity's billion dollar tomb...
And
trying to recreate the 14th century in Wyoming...
Plus, a free extra, an already-build African riff on St Peter's, put up in the middle of nowhere by an African Big Man to memorialize himself, to the tune of 300 million dollars in the 80's.

Scary. Our thoughts went in the same direction about that Great Cross thing. I was immediately reminded of the grand temples in the Egyptian necropoli where the pharaohs' funerals were held. What's that the evangelicals and fundies say about the idolatry of Catholics? Talk about logs and splinters...

BUt I like the 14th century version of western religion. if it werent for the look and philosophy of the 14th century then I probably would have become a flaming liberal athiest lgbt-ist. I personally support the wyoming project, though I dont like the new projects that try to be both "modern" and "catholic" at the same time. i feel there is a fundamental incompatibility with the two, which is why embracing the "modern" is basically to commit suicide for any church (in my opinion). And that is quite fitting that they made a giant tomb since actual christianity is pretty much in its death throws.
