I have some kind of either tiny ingrown hair or tiny splinter on the right side of my middle finger, on the middle bone. I tried to use scissors and tweezers to get it out, but it's too small. But I keep rubbing it with my thumb, over and over, and it's a very distinct point.
Reminded me of the sensory homunculus I saw many years ago on The Body In Question, with brilliant Jewish Brit theatre and opera director, actor, author, television presenter, humorist, sculptor, medical doctor and atheist* Jonathan Miller.
This is the male body, to scale, based on the amount of nerve endings it holds. No wonder that finger thing bothers me.
*Doesn't it seem as if there are a disproportionate number of actively atheist Jews?

I /heart/ the sensory homunculus. I b'leev there's also a motor-control one, with similar proportions.
This is why there's such a thing as torture by sticking things under fingernails.
And to have a nicer note -- why it seems there could be such a thing as rapturously sensual massage of the phalanges -- but have we ever heard of such a thing?
