Unexpected moments

Although stretching out The Hobbit through three movies is too much, there are moving moments.

When the great eagles come to rescue them from the Pale Orc. Like the end of LOTR, when they come to rescue Sam and Frodo. Great eagles, the way angels should have been. Loyal to smaller creatures who can do nothing to repay them.

The fate of the dwarves, dispossessed and fighting to regain a lost homeland.

And the ending song, Song of the Lonely Mountain, ain't bad, either.

I'm at a loss as to how they'll make it work as a trilogy, unless they're adding scenes that we know happened by never saw. But all-in-all, not bad. Not a masterpiece, but I definitely want to watch it again.

Richard Armitage was very impressive as Thorin, I thought he was much less blustering than in the book; you really got the feeling that he had all this frustration and lust for revenge, but a good heart underneath. Dean O'Gorman and Aidan Turner were certainly easy on the eyes as Fili and Kili- it would be fun to see dwarves become the default "sexy" race in a fantasy setting, rather than elves. I wish Manu Bennet hadn't been CGId as Azog, the man was certainly physically imposing enough to play him in prosthetics.
