Insufficient

Ran across a Where Are They Now? link and found some info on one of the Queer Eye guys from...God, could that be ten years ago?

He was good looking, easy going, un-fabulous.
But here's his Twitter account profile:

Sometimes handsome is not enough.

I recall seeing some episodes of QaF on Logo as a new teenager, staying up late in my grandparents' basement, watching what then was effectively porn to me on their big screen, unrestricted tv.

The sex scenes, even censored for Logo, were still vivid enough for my purposes. But I remember the plots of the episodes and the characters rubbed me the wrong way. So a show that was supposedly "revolutionary" for the gay community turned me off.

One of the episodes revolved around a gay writer who was criticizing the narcissistic Brian for exemplifying everything wrong with gay culture, and issued a challenge to clean up their act as a way for the gay community to gain acceptance. It was later revealed that the writer was participating in anonymous bareback orgies.

Another focussed on an interracial couple who had a show, "Gay as Blazes" I think it was called, playing a straight-laced couple. Everybody acted like it was an honest portrayal of the gay community, except for Brian, who insisted that debauchery and decadence was the face of the gay community. It turns out the couple liked to have menage a trois with their housekeepers.

So blame QaF for my "I'm just here for the hot guys" attitude towards the gay community.

I believe the story line about the gay writer was based on Andrew Sullivan, a former gay conservative whose barebacking emails were made public.

Andrew was a kind of hero of mine back in the early 2000s, when I was just realizing I was a a gay conservative. In the interim, though, he has become just another Obama asskisser.

Ah, Mr. Sullivan. I usually invoke Dan Savage as the face of gay culture's nasty politics, but I have choice words for Andrew. Even though I later read about his emails, I never made the connection.

Incidentally, that episode planted the seeds of my decision to never be guilty of the problems I saw in gay culture. And even then, I had problems with it. Sure, it seemed bright and colorful, but I still noticed how vain and inauthentic everyone seemed, like it was all a big act. And precious few masculine men to be seen. Brian from QaF has been described as "masculine," but he seemed far too caddy to deserve that descriptor.
