Why is St. Dominic's candle being held by a monkey?

Just a guess, but since St. Dominic's standard light-bearer, a black and white dog, is replaced by a monkey, the monkey has got to be bad. Is the monkey temptation? Is the monkey the devil? It doesn't make any difference since St. Dominic continues with his work.
Nicely done, Ms. Ografee. You must have had a good night's sleep. Devil in form of a monkey came to bother him. He commanded the demon monkey to hold his candle til it burned down.
My guess was going to be: if the monkey didn't hold the candle, St D. would make good on his threat to reveal to us man's genealogical descent from the ape community.
