Perfidious Albion

Watching yet another Brit series, Penny Dreadful, I note their elites' loathing of Christianity (and their own country's past) and their utter lack of scruple about or even interest in the truth. Whatever story forwards their story is the truth.

Right? I think Josh Hartnett is cute and Timothy Dalton would make a great Papa Bear but, I just could not get through the first episode, much less be bothered to watch the rest of the season.

It was an original premise, to take all the characters of Victorian gothic fantasy and put them all in relation with one another. Execution has been spotty. But for some reason, I am fascinated with that era and slog through. As with several shows I watch, atmosphere and character compensate for bad plotting and politics.

There was a time when the clothes, manners and furniture would have been enough to get me through as well. The same for the presence of vampires but, it was the somewhat jerky, fast and hyperactive cinematography that pissed me off. It made it so childish and cheesy to me, even if the scenes themselves were not. So many potentially great movies ruined that way, such as Mercy.
