An impression, not an argument.
When presidential elections are in play, voices from the Left start attacking the Electoral College because it dilutes the democratic majesty of The Popular Vote.
When gay marriage is in play and its advocates on the Left have decided to work it out through the courts, The Popular Vote is just the voice of bigotry.
PS. It's people on the Left who have a variety of proportional representation schemes they bring up from time to time, who attack the American voting system for its ruthless "Winner Take All" structure, but when it comes to their policy issues, which are always matters of COSMIC JUSTICE, either you give them everything they want --gay marriage, government health care--or you are a greedy bigot and a hater.
One of the reasons I started migrating from the liberalism I imbibed for so many years was realizing that if you took a lot of progressives, especially the most passionate and committed activists, and put them next to the supposedly rabid fascist rightwingers they hated, and turned down the volume so you couldn't hear the content, they would look almost exactly alike.
