The outside world of people and events have provided me with moments of suffering in my life. Nothing special there. But the most consistent and finally determinative source of the suffering in my life, and the suffering I cause others, is my own character.
Nothing special there, either.

"The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves."
It has always amazed me how much our reaction to a situation is self-inflicted. A crisis can be faced with self-pity and defeatism, or with resolve and determination. And how easy it can be to pull ourselves from one attitude to the other.
