Your point is well-taken, but Y2K really ought not be on the list. A LOT of people updated a LOT of code in '98 and '99 to make sure a meltdown didn't happen, and were by and large successful.
Even at worst, things never would have been as bad as the media suggested, but if the IT community hadn't taken Y2K seriously, there would have been plenty of disruption at the time.
